Adam Garner: I am participating in archaeological excavations at a site called Khirbet Summeily, a small Biblical period village (10th-8th century BCE) in the northern part of the Negev Desert in southern Israel. These excavations aim to gain insights into the daily life of the people of Biblical Judah, during the days of the kings of the Divided Monarchy, which followed the reigns of David and Solomon. Archaeology can greatly help provide a context for what we read in the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. Awareness of context is so vital to accurate interpretation that its importance can hardly be overstated. As I heard a renowned New Testament scholar say, "A text without a context is just a pretext for making it say anything you want it to say." This Summer Field School in the Negev that I am participating in will be held from June 18 through July 20, 2012.
